Patrick Muldoon Describes Caregiver Program (and More!) in Q&A Feature

caregiver collage issac and daveIn a one-on-one Telegram & Gazette feature, Medical Center President Patrick Muldoon shared details about his role, responsibilities, career and also details about our Everyone Everyday program. He said, “The concept is that whether you’re Patrick Muldoon, who sits in an office most of the time, or a nurse at the bedside, or the cafeteria worker who is greeting everyone, in one way or another, we are all caregivers.” Learn about two of our caregivers:

  • Isaac Jensen, houseworker, Medical Center: “I saw a woman in the lobby who was having trouble. I asked her in sign language if she was deaf. She was, so I walked with her and helped her to make an appointment.”
  • Dave Bilotta, director of facilities, HealthAlliance Hospital: “My initiative, I would say, is to be able to create a sacred space for each patient to be able to recover and heal in the most positive atmosphere possible.”

For the final project of the fourth Physician Leadership Development Program, participants pitched funding of an innovative idea that would improve patient experience and/or employee engagement at UMass Memorial Health Care. The pitches, made to the UMass Memorial leadership team, were a half-day exercise in partnership with Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The event was called the Shark Tank as it mirrored the ABC television show. “We do not just hand the team their funds but rather partner them with individuals within the organization to ensure that the plan is sound,” said Michele Streeter, executive vice president and chief operating officer for the Medical Group. Our Physicians Applaud New FDA Regulations on Tobacco

Several of our physicians applauded a recent Food and Drug Administration decision to prohibit the sale of all tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18, including e-cigarettes. The regulations ask for further research to close the knowledge gap about the effects and potential health risks of e-cigarette vapor, a largely untested and unregulated product that is sometimes marketed as a smoking cessation aid. The new regulations clear the way for additional measures that will curb the use of e-cigarettes by teenagers. Physicians Joseph DiFranzia, MD, Douglas Ziedonis, MD, Judith Ockene, PhD, and Lynda Young, MD, were interviewed by UMassMedNow.
