Patrick Muldoon Earns Senior Healthcare Executive of the Year Award

Congratulations to Medical Center President Patrick Muldoon, FACHE, who recently earned the Senior Healthcare Executive of the Year Award from ACHE of Massachusetts, an independent chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives. The award recognizes health care leaders for their leadership skills, commitment to developing others, and active participation in local and state hospital, health care and civic affairs. “Leading a safety net hospital can be challenging on so many levels. Our Medical Center is fortunate to have a leader like Patrick Muldoon who is caring, capable and committed to our patients and our caregivers,” said Eric Dickson, MD, president and CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care.

Dr. Schaal Named Fellow for Women in Medicine Program

The Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia has named Shlomit Schaal, MD, PhD, chair of ophthalmology, a fellow in the class of 2017-2018. This intensive year-long program for women in medicine develops the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage in today’s complex health care environment, with a special focus on the unique challenges facing women in leadership positions. “As a new chair, I face many challenges,” said Dr. Schaal. She added, “I anticipate that by participating in ELAM, I will develop my leadership and my communications skills, and acquire management skills and administrative knowledge that will allow me to better serve.”

Golf Tournament Raises $10,000 for Colorectal Cancer Research

The 6th annual Clubs for Colorectal Cancer Golf Tournament and Benefit Dinner, hosted by the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery, was a huge success this year, raising nearly $10,000 for colorectal cancer research. “This continues to be my favorite day of the year for UMass Memorial Medical Center. Seeing our caregivers and supporters out there alongside the patients we work so hard for makes this a truly amazing event. My thanks go out to all who made the day possible, and the countless others who couldn’t join us but still donated so generously,” said Paul Sturrock, MD, colorectal surgeon. About 75 players and dinner guests, including physicians, community members and patients, attended the event.

Sign up to Lose Weight; Learn about 12-month Research Study

The Medical School is recruiting adults ages 18 to 65 who are interested in losing weight to participate in a 12-month weight loss research study. It is designed to help people lose weight through a healthy diet and physical activity.
