In a recent Telegram & Gazette article, President and CEO Eric Dickson said that when we “flick the switch,” to launch Epic on October 1, it’s going to be a “big, big day” for patients, providers and our community. The T&G reported how our health care system will implement about 50 different modules of Epic, covering everything from the pharmacy department to physician orders and integrate with about 70 to 90 other software systems. Tim Tarnowski, senior vice president and chief information officer, explained training is up next. “You have to build curriculum. That doesn’t come out of the box,” he said. He added that 1,200 super users will learn to use Epic first so they can help with the rollout to employees across our system.

Study Highlights the Dangers of Fentanyl-laced Heroin

Dr. Babu

In collaboration with the Medical School and the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education in Willow Grove, PA, Kativa Babu, MD, chief, Division of Toxicology, co-authored a study published in the Journal of Toxicology examining opioid overdoes and the often unknown presence of fentanyl. Dr. Babu and Brittany Chapman, co-author and clinical research assistant, were recently interviewed by the Telegram & Gazette. Their findings showed 93.3 percent of patients revived from a heroin overdose tested positive for fentanyl, while only half knew they had taken the synthetic opioid that is nearly 50 times stronger than heroin. The findings highlight risks opioid users expose themselves to and how researchers can warn the public when deadly heroin batches are circulating. Read article.
