Fundraising Efforts Bring Local IVF Clinic Closer to Realization

Julia Johnson, MD, chair of the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is edging close to her fundraising goal of $500,000 to build a 2,500-square-foot in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic at the Medical Center. Complete with a procedure room to extract eggs and implant embryos, a recovery room, a laboratory to fertilize eggs and grow embryos, and spaces to collect samples, the new clinic would be the first of its kind in Worcester, allowing families to undergo the IVF procedure closer to home. UMass Memorial Health Care will match Dr. Johnson’s raised funds with an additional $500,000 to bring the clinic online. Read the Telegram & Gazette article. Mark Johnson, MD, PhD, chair, Department of Neurosurgery, recently joined Meghna Chakrabarti, host of National Public Radio’s On Point, to provide insight on the lack of diversity in medicine. The panel discussed the recent NBC News article, “The Death of Black Men in Medicine Is Worrisome.” Dr. Johnson said, “As there are successes – high-profile successes  – of African Americans who have achieved in a variety of areas, there has been a narrative that the problem has been solved.”  Listen to the complete interview.

Women’s Health Series: Take a Virtual Maternity Center Tour

Delivering a baby may not be “simple,” but deciding where to deliver should be! In response to an increasing demand for tours of our Maternity Center, we now offer an online tour of the Medical Center’s Mother-Baby Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). In addition to providing parents-to-be with a snapshot of both units, the video includes a brief overview of what to expect when delivery time comes from Julia Johnson, MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology, Larry Rhein, MD, chief of the NICU, and fellow parents who have experienced first-hand what it’s like to deliver here. Watch the tour and check out our other resources by visiting Simply Women. #SimplyWomen
