Dr. Ron Adler Offers Advice on Cancer Screenings and Over Diagnosis

Dr. Adler

Dr. Adler

As cancer screening guidelines change and sometimes cause patient confusion, Ronald Adler, MD, family physician, Hahnemann Family Health Center, strongly advises that physicians and patients jointly discuss when and how often to be tested. Dr. Adler believes physicians need to balance screening recommendations and patient priorities with the goal of reducing overdiagnosis, false positives, and overtreatment. He said this method, called shared decision-making, “is a challenge and takes a lot of time, but it lays out the pros and cons and helps a patient explore their own values and preferences.”  Read more on UMassMed Now.
