Advance Care Planning: When to Discuss with Patients?

Christine McCluskey, a member of the UMass Memorial Health Care advance planning team said she has learned through her experience that patients are very open to learning about this important planning process. “The time that’s most difficult, and can be very stressful, is in the midst of a medical crisis when emotions run high, and there is greater potential for disagreement and even conflict among family members,” she said. McCluskey noted that it’s better to discuss advance care planning as a routine health topic. Our health care system providers can receive 300 myHealth Matters wellness points for completing their own advance care plan online. Providers: Learn more about our online advance care plan.
