Q&A with Retiring Medical Center President Patrick Muldoon

After a 40-year career in health care, Medical Center President Patrick Muldoon, FACHE, will retire January 31. Patrick has been with the UMass Memorial Health Care system for 14 years. Prior to becoming president of our Medical Center in August 2013, he was the president at HealthAlliance Hospital, now UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital.

Patrick Muldoon retires January 31.

Question: Where did you grow up?
Patrick
Muldoon (PM): I grew up in New Bedford, MA in a family of six children. My father was the son of Irish immigrants and my mother’s family came from Ireland as well.

Q: Were you always interested in a career in health care?
PM
: At one point, I dreamed of playing professional football, but fate intervened. My fascination with hospitals started when I had knee surgery following a high school football injury. Good decision!

Q: What brought you to pursue health care management?
PM:
Health care has always been a calling for me rather than a job. My parents were in the field. My dad was a dentist as is my brother. My mother was a nurse along with two of my sisters. My third sister was a medical social worker. As an undergraduate at Providence College, I had the choice to pursue a degree in preparation for medicine or health care management. I knew then that management was the right choice for me.

During the October Epic/Joint Commission Survey thank-you celebration, Patrick posed for a photo with Talia LaPointe, quality and patient safety, left, and served food on the Hahnemann Campus.

Q: What do you consider some of the most memorable moments in your career?
PM:
I’ll never forget receiving my first job offer for the role of assistant to the president of the American Osteopathic Hospital Association. I was so excited to be driving to Chicago in my Toyota Corolla filled to the brim with all my worldly possessions. Since then, I’ve encountered challenges both big and small throughout my career; yet nothing has been more memorable than the countless opportunities I’ve had to connect with caregivers and patients. I’ve seen people at their most vulnerable times and in every instance, I’ve been honored to share those deeply personal moments.

Q: What do you plan to do during your retirement?
PM:
Spend much more time with my family and our 18-month-old grandchild. And we have another grandchild on the way. I love to sail and plan to rekindle many former hobbies and interests. I’ve also just received my Irish citizenship and plan to travel there to learn more about my Irish heritage and reconnect with extended family. I also hope to find an opportunity to volunteer in a way that allows me to give back to a profession that I have loved for many years.
