The Weight Is Over for UMass Memorial Health Care Caregivers

Your colleagues in the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) and the 2 Lakeside Intensive Care Unit (LICU) are winning by losing – weight, that is! They recently completed the Biggest Loser weight loss challenge organized by Employee Health Services. Four hundred and eight pounds later, the CDU and LICU team members can now log 1,000 points under the Manage Your Weight challenge on the myHealth Matters website. The Medical School is recruiting adults ages 18 to 65 who are interested in losing weight to participate in a 12-month weight loss research study. It is designed to help people lose weight through a healthy diet and physical activity. Participants will be taught strategies to control appetite, reduce portion sizes, increase exercise enjoyment and develop long-term habits. There is one month left of recruitment. Carol Shares Her Weight Center Experience and Important Life Changes

Carol Beauchemin weighed 301 pounds when she entered the Weight Center. She’d been heavy all her life, but it wasn’t until she felt like she wasn’t in control that she knew it was time for change. With high blood pressure and prediabetes, Carol couldn’t do what she loved most: walking on the beach. With the help of the Weight Center, Carol learned lifestyle changes to implement proper nutrition and exercise, and lost 151 pounds. Spotlight on Wellness: Meet Our Champion Jessica Gatulis

Jessica Gatulis, histocompatibility laboratory, is taking charge of her health and isn’t afraid to show it. “My own health has often taken a back seat to my career and my children. One day, I woke up and realized I didn’t recognize or feel like myself anymore.” Jessica joined a boot camp weight-loss program and met like-minded workout buddies. She said, “I schedule time every day to exercise, and schedule two days a week to prep my meals so I am always prepared and prioritizing myself and my health.” You can follow in Jessica’s footsteps by joining the Fitness Center Challenge or completing other healthy activities on the myHealth Matters website.

Take Advantage of Blue Cross Blue Shield Wellness Benefits!

If you’re a member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) HMO or PPO medical plan, you’re eligible to receive up to $150 annually toward fitness memberships and weight loss programs. BCBS will reimburse you up to $150 each calendar year for eligible costs you pay for health club membership fees or for fitness classes taken at a qualified health club. You can also receive a reimbursement for up to $150 each calendar year for costs you pay to participate in qualified weight loss programs. A qualified weight loss program is a hospital-based weight loss program or a non-hospital-based weight loss program designated by BCBS. Submit a fitness or weight loss reimbursement form.
